Yes it was a
flood of biblical proportion lol. On the
morning of December 15, I had just thrown a load of laundry
into the washer and
John and I were finishing our Christmas cards. I got up to walk down the
hallway and noticed the bathroom floor was flooded. I called John and so began
our sad saga.
It seems the
sewer had backed up and overflowed. When the washing machine pumped out the
water, the sewer could not handle that much water and it backed up into the hall
bath overflowing the toilet and flooding the floor, filling the tub too. It
also backed up into the shower in the master bath, but was contained to just
the shower. The hall carpet was wet and it was running out on the patio from
the under the bathroom wall. It started to come up in the dining room floor also. I grabbed the carpet seam cleaner and the shop vac. And between those two
and LOTS of towels we managed to contain it. We called a Plummer friend who came to
try to fix it. Long story short, it was the City’s fault. At 10 pm, Saturday
evening the man from the city said that his crew would be out Sunday morning. Well they came out and dug up a spot near the street and decided Yup it sure was their fault. YEA! They pay for it.
So, the man
from the city calls the restoration people who come right over and start
tearing out the Pergo flooring in the kitchen and dining room, the carpet in
the hallway and rolling back the carpet in the family room. They took out all
the cabinets in the dining room. Then they
decided there was asbestos in the floor. So now things get complicated. This is the Dining room looking into the Bathroom. Yes they removed the wall board between the bathroom and dining room. We're going for that open floor plan look here. lol
 They put big
sheets of plastic on the hallway and dining room floor. They hang HUGE sheets
of plastic from the ceiling to the floor between the kitchen/dining and family
room. They hang the plastic from the ceiling to floor in the kitchen over the
cabinets and seal off the doorways with big plastic sheets with zippers in
them. They “contain” the area. I’m learning lots of technical “has mat” terms.
Then the EPA comes in to chemically remove the asbestos. They wear plastic
suits and breathing masks over their faces, and look like something from a
science fiction movie. They moved in a huge hepa filter (the size of a small refrigerator) and a
de-humidifier they both need to run 24-7. Think noise like a 747 here.
The chemical to remove the asbestos is supposed to have a “nice citrus
scent” - WRONG. Think turpentine here. Citrus scent? What’s he talking about? I
think the fumes have gotten to him and ruined his smeller. This is shooting from the family room (My furniture piled up) towards the kitchen

Entry hall towards dining room (Yes thats a refrigerator in my entry hall and the zipper door into the dining room)
This is my bathroom. They removed the vanity (Yes it was just put in this summer) Shooting towards the dining room wall.
On Friday December 28,
they removed the plastic from the kitchen cabinets so we could have access to
the kitchen for the Christmas holiday.
Now, the microwave is in the office, the refrigerator is in the hallway,
misc canned food (I was able to grab before they packed up everything to store
until my cabinets in the dining room are returned) are in the back bedroom and
the dishes are in the kitchen where they belong. So we spent the “holiday”
moving from room to room gathering what we need to try to scratch together a
meal. LOL. Takes 20 minutes to find and gather what you need.
We were
supposed to have Christmas with the girls at our house but it was moved last
minute to Kristen’s house. It really was nice. Christmas Day we went to Jens
house and hung out. We truly are blessed.
Well that’s
the first week one of our saga. They say with the holidays it will probably take 6 weeks
to get it all done. I'll post more later.
